Edward Whitmont, Jungian analyst, wrote the following in "Alchemy of Healing:"
"If everything continued 'happily ever after,' we would remain in an undisturbed and permanently dulled state. Nothing of interest could happen, no development would be possible, there would be no life play. A disturber of the peace, a spoiler, a serpent or corrupting agent is necessary to 'get the play going.' It must function as a Lucifer, a bringer of light, of new information and awareness. Initially, the disruptive element will tend to be perceived as evil, and the disturber who personifies it will be rejected and made a scapegoat. Although this element brings forth what needs to come into existence, the personifier will be blamed because it is felt to be painful or repellent. This is why the devil (. . .derived from the Greek diabolos. . .'confuser') is also the angel of light, a Lucifer, and the scapegoat is a potential redeemer." And from Larry Dossey: "The Almighty gave Lucifer an exalted place in heaven because he contributed something important to creation." And finally, the following quotes sum it up: "The true difficulty in life is choice" (unattributed) and "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun" (Kate Hepburn) Sin, "to miss the mark," has been the nemesis of religion since the beginning. Yet, without it, there would be no need for salvation, no reason to progress, no way to enjoy life. All would be light and there is as much blindness in all light as there is in all darkness. We need sin. We need a Corrupter. We need Lucifer! God knows it, now you know it. Why would God toss Lucifer to earth if not to stimulate the Couple to begin making choices? Why put the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (choice) in the center of the Garden and then tell the Couple not to eat from it? That's like saying "don't think of a red Chevy." In order not to think of it, you have to picture it first, then, if possible, let it go. But you still have to think of it first. So, God plants it in the minds of the Couple: the tree in the center will give you choice. It is good for opening up new avenues. You'll like it. Now, don't touch it. Or else you'll die on the spot. Of course, they touch it, they eat from it, they don't die. "See," says Lucifer. "God knew you wouldn't die. He knew your eyes would be opened and you'd be like him, his spitting image. You'd have choice. I've served my purpose." Go To Page: 1 2
