Living Consciously, On Purpose

(Word Count 725)

Have you discovered your purpose in life? Your reason for being here? I believe we arrive in this world with the potential to be whatever our gifts, talents, inclinations, and choices allow. Purpose is not handed down by some outside force. We find, build it, make it real. But the majority never taps into more than a small amount of that potential. George Bernard Shaw said, "This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."

Are you spending your life doing what you want to do? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to find out if your direction is the best one, the brightest one, the most delicious one available to you. After all, karma or not, for all you know, you have just this one lifetime. Care to make the best of it? Answer yes or no to each question:

1. Do I feel a sense of balance in my life? 2. Do I regularly enjoy a hearty belly laugh? 3. Do I live my dreams? 4. Do I take time for solitude? 5. Do I have at least two nurturing relationships? 6. Do I feel the energy of optimum health? 7. Do I have a spiritual practice in my life? 8. Do I feel that my life matters? 9. Does my recreation time re-create me? 10. Do I have the courage to say no? 11. Do I wake up most Mondays feeling energized to go to work or to my business or to. . .? 12. Do I have deep energy--feel a personal calling--for my work? 13. Am I clear about how I measure my success as a person? 14. Do I use my gifts to add real value to people's lives? 15. Do I work with people who honor the values I value? 16. Can I speak my truth at my work? 17. Am I experiencing true joy in my work? 18. Am I making a living doing what I most love to do? 19. Can I speak my purpose in one clear sentence? 20. Do I go to sleep most nights feeling "this was a well lived day"?

If you answered yes to most of the questions, you're obviously intent on making a difference through your work. You've tapped into more potential than does the average person. If you answered no to more than a third of the questions, you may want to reconsider the path you're currently on.
