Local Media Part II

Let's continue our look at TV stations in the Big Easy.

When deregulation of broadcast rules hit New Orleans, one station effected was WGNO, Channel 26. http://www.wgno.com

Before deregulation, WGNO was the oldest independent station in the city. Today, it is the ABC affiliate.

The home page has short headlines showing what is currently showing on the station and what follows. There are also numerous news head lines, current weather information, and special promotions.

As part of the Tribune Broadcasting Group, the news is gathered from other Tribune stations and ABC News.

The station does have three web cams posted on the site, although you cannot choose which cam you want to view and you have to manually refresh the image yourself every three minutes.

Continuing on the dial is WLAE, Channel 32. http://www.pbs.org/wlae

The second Public Broadcasting Network affiliate in the Big Easy, WLAE is focused more on the educational side of television. It features more programs focused on New Orleans and Louisiana than it's sister station, WYES.

The web site itself clearly shows the current programming highlights, how to support the station as either a patron or business, the history of the station, and numerous email addresses for different contacts within the station.

The site is hosted through the main PBS web site, but also has a somewhat separate web site for the production aspect of the station. It can be found at http://www.wlae.com

WNOL, Channel 38, is the Warner Brothers affiliate in New Orleans. http://www.wnol.com

There's no multimedia on the web site, although there is a full complement of links to the various shows broadcast on the station, from the first run shows in Prime Time, to the syndicated shows of yesterday.

There is a station schedule updated daily, showing the schedule for the week.

The biggest problem with the web site is broken links. A good number of links, failed to go to the requested page, including those that are on WNOL's own site. Prepare to do some manual scrolling and don't use any graphic links, as those seem to fail the most.

The next station on the dial is WCCL, Channel 49, the Home Shopping Network station. WCCL has no dedicated web site and a look at the Home Shopping Network web site provided no links either.

The final station on the dial is WUPL, Channel 54, the United Paramount Network affiliate. http://www.upn54.com - redirects to http://www.paramountstations.com/WUPL/

This site is hosted off the main Paramount Stations web site, which is owned by Viacom.

The site offers the usual complement of links to shows that are run on the station, tells you which show is currently airing, and which show will follow.
