Local Television Media on the Internet

Although New Orleans is not considered a hot bed of technology, the local media is utilizing the Internet in various ways.

Starting with the lower end of the dial and moving up, we begin with WWL TV, Channel 4, the CBS affiliate. http://www.wwltv.com

This has to be the best local media site in the city. Their web page is consistently updated throughout the day with up to the minute news, sports, and weather.

Local news is covered giving all the pertinent information without being overly large. Live weather coverage including a time-elapsed Doppler radar. Sports coverage is up to date, with at least the Superbowl score being posted within minutes of it ending.

One of the best things about WWL's web site is the availability of its news broadcast over the Internet through broadcast.com

With an archive of all news broadcasts for the previous three days and a live simultaneous broadcast, there is never an excuse for missing the news again.

Next on the dial is WDSU, Channel 6, the NBC affiliate. http://www.wdsu.com

WDSU is currently in the midst of redesigning their web site. There is not much active media of the site.

Every weekday they post a "cyber survey" and disclose the results during the 10:00 PM broadcast. There is also a message forum for discussing local events.

The news coverage is done in cooperation with insideneworleans.com and weather links to intellicast.com.

WDSU is more of a group of content providers than doing much on their own.

WVUE, Channel 8, the Fox affiliate, is the next station on the dial. They currently have no web presence but a search shows they are in talks with a company, WorldNow.com, to develop a web site.

Following next is WYES, one of the Public Broadcasting Stations. http://www.pbs.org/wyes/

Although not much in the way of interactive content, the site is easily navigated to see what's playing the current week and any highlights for the month. An excellent resource for those who watch on a regular basis.

A recent addition to the airwaves in New Orleans is Channel 20, WHNO, a local Christian owned and operated station.

The web site is not much on the interactive side either, although it does present the stations programming and overall mission clearly. As the local station for the New Orleans Zephyrs, you can watch the games on your TV when the baseball season is in swing.
