Let the Festivities BeginBy claiming the title King of Carnival, Rex was able to draw a more public crowd than was invited to the festivities of Comus which was founded by "blue-blood" and holds those roots to this day. With the addition of the Grand Duke Romanoff to the city for Rex's inaugural parade, it helped create the publicity of royalty visiting royalty. In 1969, the Krewe of Bacchus rolled through the streets of New Orleans for the first time. This krewe was also formed to increase the popularity of Mardi Gras by naming a celebrity to be its king (Danny Kaye was the first King of Bacchus). By using celebrities as monarchs and building the largest floats possible, Bacchus has become a must-see for many carnival revelers.
