Get Some Free Tools!

Toolbars can be your best resource or your worst enemy. A toolbar sits in the frame of your browser, up there with the File, Edit, View and etc. lines. A new toolbar will open itself on a fresh line.

But, you don't have to leave it there. Just right click your mouse on a blank space up there and you will get a list of options. See where it says 'lock the toolbars'? Just uncheck that and you can start playing. Rearrange the whole section or just drag around chunks of it into a new order. Whatever suits you. Practice dragging things around to get an idea of how that works. All you need to do is look for that raised line at the beginning of each section. Grab that with your mouse and pull it to where you want it. Once you are happy with your arrangement just right click an empty space again and lock the toolbar. Sometimes it will not stay the way you arranged it. Just unlock it and try again. If it's a bit fussy shift things around a bit. Eventually you will come up with something that works for you and your fussy web browser. Don't get frustrated it has some reason for being fussy we just don't know what it is.

Luckily not all toolbars are villainous. I use two which I would not want to be without now. One is the Google toolbar which you can easily get from the Google site. I like its pop up killer. It works silently in the back ground and kills 99% of the pop ups. Plus, you can set it to allow pop ups from certain domains, anything that gives you pop up windows for quizzes for example. I also like the page rank and the happy and sad faces which you can rate sites as you surf.

The Google toolbar gives you access to all of Google's searches too. You just type in whatever you're curious about and click 'Search Web' and you can have it open in a new window with everything it has found. You have the option of searching for images, through Google Groups or something completely random if you use the lucky option.

The other toolbar which I might even like more than Google is StumbleUpon. Since January 1st of 2004 I have been a happy stumbler. You can bump into me there: http://thatgrrl.stumbleupon.com/ StumbleUpon is freeware and does not load you with ads, pop up windows or spyware.
