Places
Newport's Town Common is one of the largest and busiest in the state. In the true Yankee spirit of the traditional town common, it draws people together for a variety of activities all year round. Farmer's markets, flea markets, and concerts fill the schedule during the warm-weather months. Each winter the Town Common is flooded to create a huge ice skater's haven. And this has been going on for almost a century!

Music lovers have a musical haven in the Newport Opera House. The July 2000 Issue of New Hampshire Magazine gave it a well-deserved review -- "The Best Venue for Music." Exceptional artists of blues, jazz, folk, or classical music grace the schedule.

Newport is home to three covered bridges that span Sugar River. The Corbin Bridge was built in 1845. It was recently rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1993. The Pier Bridge, also known as Chandler Station, is one of the town's two railroad bridges. It was built in 1871 by the Sugar River Railroad, and then rebuilt in 1907 by the Boston and Maine Railroad. Wright's is the other railroad bridge. It was also constructed by the Sugar River Railroad in 1871 and rebuilt by the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1906.

The Richards Free Library actively engages the community in a variety of arts and cultural activities. The library celebrates noted authors with the annual Sarah Josepha Hale Award. In order to win the award, the author must have a New England connection. Robert Frost was the first recipient in 1956. The list of distinguished recipients includes Ogden Nash, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Newport and tourism go hand in hand. Year-round activities in town or nearby are plentiful. According to Newport's Web site:

"Located in the heart of a four-season-recreational area, opportunities for skiing, skating, golfing, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, hunting, jogging, and horse-back riding abound. The ski areas of Mt. Sunapee, Whaleback Mountain, and Vermont’s Mt. Ascutney are all close by. Lake Sunapee also provides opportunities to enjoy water related activities."

Newport truly combines small-town charm with all the advantages and opportunities of modern-day life in work and play!
