1. Overcome drug resistance by administering inhibitors of ATP-binding cassettes. This approach has already been studied without great success.
2. Develop antibodies to ATP-binding cassettes or other stem cell markers. These antibodies would combine with the markers and deliver toxins or radioisotopes that would kill the cell.
3. Develop inhibitors of cell signaling molecules or of their receptors on the cell surface. This would shut down the cell division process.
4. Activate the patient's immune system against his or her cancer cells. Lethally irradiating the patient's tumor stem cells and re-administering them could accomplish this.
