What phytochemicals are being studies as possible cancer preventives?

Isothiocyanates - are released from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, watercress and Brussels sprouts) after digestion. An example is sulphoraphane.

Isoflavones - are found in soybeans and other legumes. An example is genistein.

Indoles - are also found in cruciferous vegetables. An example is indole carbinol.

Allyl sulfides - are found in plants of the garlic and onion family.

Polyphenols - such as epigallocatechin gallate are commonly found in green teas.

Carotenoids - a large class of compounds that include pigments and the familiar β-carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A. Of particular interest is lycopene, found in tomatoes, which holds promise in the prevention of prostate cancer.

Phenols - provide protection from oxidative damage and inflammation. An example is resveratrol found in grapes.

Other examples - include curcumin in the spice turmeric, capsaicin found in chili peppers, and gingerol in the spice ginger.
