Picking the best novels is essentially a silly exercise, meaningless, but it already has created talk about great literature. The publisher Random House and its Modern Library division, which publishes 59 of the 100, undoubtedly is thrilled with the press coverage their list has received. My pick for the best novel of the century? I thought you'd never ask. It's a tie between Harper Lee's Mockingbird and Fitzgerald's haunting The Great Gatsby.
