GROWING UP, JEWISH STYLE

Growing up has been the basis for thousands of books, both fact and fiction. It's a story that no matter how often told, can become fresh and new. The continuing presence of Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes on the bestseller lists shows how growing up never becomes boring in the hands of the skilled author.

Growing Up Jewish (Avon paperback, $12) assembles 25 moving, funny, tragic, and compelling stories — both true and fanciful — about the experience of adolescence in America, Jewish style.

The lineup of writers will impress. The bylines include those of Max Apple, Edna Ferber, Herbert Gold, Joanne Greenberg, Grace Paley, Chaim Potok, Philip Roth, and Kate Simon.

One of my favorite novels of the past three decades is The Chosen, published in 1967 by Potok, an ordained rabbi and author of acclaimed novels and essays. There's a delightful excerpt here. Read it, then head to the library for a copy of one of the best novels you'll ever read.
