The book is being described as an overview of Howells's artistic and moral concerns and an indication of the span and evolution of his contribution to literature.

Editor Ruth Bardon has done an outstanding job in assembling excellent examples of Howells's staggering amount of work. Anyone interested in being introduced to one of the best but unfairly overlooked writers should make haste to the bookseller to order this one.
