Marias may well become one of the most admired writers of the present. A Heart So White, in an excellent translation by Margaret Hull Costa, demands attention and respect.

CUBA MUSINGS -- Everyone received an updating on Cuba during the Elian Gonzalez crisis. Many Americans have reassessed U.S. policy toward Fidel Castro. Our policy has caused terrible hardships for the Cuban people, while not materially affecting Castro.

A write who knows both sides is Roman de la Campa, a Cuban native who lives in the U.S. His new book, Cuba on My Mind: Journeys to a Severed Nation (Verso Books) questions both sides of a family feud that reflects the author’s own experiences.

His thoughtful book shows how globalization and post-socialism are shaping a Cuban national split with obvious consequences. Those consequences affect both the U.S. and Cuba.
