There are a multitude of problems in working through time, as the intrepid hero of this romp, Ned Henry, quickly learns. Exhausted from too many trips into the past while working for a crazed woman seeking to rebuild Coventry Cathedral (destroyed during a Nazi bombing raid in 1940), he's sent back to Victorian England for a rest. That, naturally, leads to all sorts of wild complications.

Willis, who possesses a wicked sense of humor, is a veteran of such time opuses, including Doomsday Book from 1992 (set in the English countryside in the time of the Black Plague) and the earlier Fire Watch, which took place in London during the Blitz.

Hero Ned Henry, often confused by the wear and tear on his mind due to previous time journeys, makes a wonderful protagonist in what surely deserves to be the big science-fiction title of the new year.
