In its potential state, Kundalini is responsible for our everyday existence-our animation and our consciousness-but when it is activated, Kundalini becomes a freight train of cosmic energy capable of triggering enormous transformation, both physical and spiritual, and to those undergoing a spontaneous Kundalini awakening, the process can be as frightening as it is uplifting.

On moving through the chakras, the Kundalini energy dissolves blockages, both physical and psychological, that impede its progress toward the crown. This results in a heightened sense of vitality and conscious awareness as the energy purifies the subtle and causal bodies in its progression upwards. This experience can be euphoric, but it can also be terrifying, for the possible manifestations of an awakened Kundalini run the gamut from pleasant tingling sensations in the spine and feelings of elation to sharp pains in the chakra areas and involuntary contortions of the body. Visions are not uncommon among those whose Kundalini is on the rise, and many undergo episodes of spontaneous vocalizations, hot flashes and/or intense anxiety attacks. These are all indications of the purification that is taking place in the chakras, but to those who are unprepared or uninformed, such dramatic manifestations can be alarming in the extreme. For this reason, the guidance of a guru is highly recommended during the awakening process.

Psychologically, the rising of Kundalini brings about an intense desire for truth, both cosmic and personal, and thus it is the catalyst for an in-depth search for self beyond the confines of ego and conditioned behavior. This process of analysis results in the discovery of the authentic self as divine in its own right and the realization of our interconnectedness with all that is. As each energy center is opened, those parts of self that are manifestations of ego are recognized and released, allowing for the attainment of higher levels of spirituality and power.

Although the awakening of Kundalini is a physically and psychologically demanding process, it is undertaken with great joy and devotion by many who seek union with the One. The Divine Mother bestows the gifts of insight and awareness, freeing her children from the bonds of ego consciousness, uniting them with their true spiritual essence and revealing to them the ultimate truths of the universe, and devotees are more than willing to undergo the challenges of Her rigorous cleansing to attain the divine bliss that She proffers.
