It's believed that each soul has its own angel. It's been said, "The dignity of a soul is so great, that each has a guardian angel from its birth." Peter the Lombard thought that one angel had charge of several individual human beings. The Bible represents the angels not only as our guardians, but also as actually interceding for us. "The angel Raphael says: "I offered thy prayer to the Lord" St. Ambrose stated: "We should pray to the angels who are given to us as guardians."

A Gallup poll found that 69% of Americans believed in angels. 50% believed they have had the presence of a guardian angel in their lives (Time magazine found 68% believes in angels and 32% have one actively in their life). There are more than 200 books on angels, the majority written from non Christians such as One Hundred Ways to Attract Angels. Others that are more parochial are All the Angels of the Bible, Angels Elect and Evil, Angels Gods Secret Agents, Angels Among Us, and The Rustle of Angels among others.

In the African tradition, the Ombwiri are considered to be the guardian angels for tribes in central Africa. They are described as transparent, white, ghostly apparitions. These angelic beings in the form of ancestors are believed to come back and keep an eye on the family. They are capable of initiating inflictions, illnesses, misfortune or well-being and wealth. The Ombwiri are believed to demand cooperation from their descendant. The Yoruba (tribe) believe that the Orisha (tribe) were once human beings who led notable lives and became Gods at death, as well.

In Ancient Persian tradition, the Zoroastrians believed that the Fravashis (Favashi) are guardian angels and/or protecting spirits. They are celestial prototypes of all created beings; they have an angel's nature, with human and mortal qualities. Derived from the Greek word "sliphe" meaning butterfly or moth the Fravashis (Favashi) were invisible angels whose voice is said to be heard on the wind.

In Celtic tradition, Morrigan (the Great Queen or Phantom Queen) who was Morgan Le Fey in her a last incarnation, was the triplicity of Valkyries-Badb (Crow), Macha (also Crow), and Nemain (Frenzy). She had the right to choose of slain warriors who would be carried to the afterworld and has connections with the element water.

In the Hindu tradition, types of angels are mentioned with the following attributes:
