For years, Dominique had said that someday he would travel back home to see his family and the great Pyrenees where he had lived and watched over his family's flocks of sheep. Laxalt's family had grown amused over his statements that "now wasn't a good time, maybe next year he would go." Finally, when Dominque was in his seventies, he suffered a stroke while alone in the mountains. His family finally decided to take action and planned a trip for him back to France, purchasing the tickets for his round trip airfare and making reservations for him at hotels along the way. They also made all his necessary appointments to obtain his passport and vaccinations. In this way, he felt obligated to follow through with the trip.
