Winter Sports Safety

  • Pay attention to what's going on around you, and make sure you have plenty of room to stop or avoid people or objects nearby. Never assume your right-of-way. Get in the habit of remembering to yield.

  • Don't stop on trails where others coming from behind cannot see you. Just as while you are driving, people coming from behind have the responsibility to avoid you, but you must do your part in keeping a collision from happening.

  • Pay attention to, and obey, signs that are posted and meant to tell you where the allowed trails are. If you go your own way and become lost, it may be some time before it is realized that you are missing. You also risk the lives of those that would come to your rescue.

  • In higher-risk areas, take classes in avalanche safety. They will teach you how to recognize signs of possibly unstable areas, and what to do if you're caught in one.

  • Wear proper clothing and bring plenty of sunscreen. A basic first-aid kit is a good idea to carry along, and don't forget a bottle of water to help keep you hydrated--most winter sports will cause you to work up a sweat.

  • And the best advice for winter safety? Simply the lessons our moms tried to teach us when we were kids: USE COMMON SENSE, and MIND YOUR MANNERS.
