Want to know what Nevada’s official bird is? How about the state’s major industries? The song? This article will actually be an ongoing project—as I find information, I will add it here along with links to help you learn more.

Admission: October 31, 1864 – 36th state. This date was declared a state holiday in 1939, and since then Nevada Day has been celebrated every year with parades and events throughout Nevada.

Animal: The Desert Bighorn Sheep

Bird: The Mountain Bluebird

Capital: Carson City

Climate/Weather: According to my grandmother, the saying “Don’t like the weather? Just wait five minutes!” originated in Nevada. Our highest recorded temperature reading was 122 degrees on June 23, 1954, at Overton; our lowest reading was –50 degrees on January 8, 1937, at San Jacinto.

Motto: All for our country.

Nickname: We have three nicknames for the state of Nevada. They are “The Silver State”, “The Sagebrush State”, and “The Battle-born State” (adopted on March 26, 1937).

Origin of Name: Adopted on March 2, 1861, when the territory was established by congress from lands originally a part of the Utah Territory. “Nevada” is spanish for “snow-clad” or “snow-capped” and refers to the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.

Population: As of December 2000, Nevada placed 35th in terms of US population listings with 1,998,257 people counted.

Reptile: Well, we are a desert state—the Desert Tortoise is our state reptile.

Song: “Home Means Nevada”, written by Mrs. Bertha Raffetto of Reno, NV; adopted as the official state song on February 6, 1933.

State Fair: Held in Reno, Washoe County, from late August through early September.

Topography: Nevada’s highest point is 13,143 feet, Boundary Peak. The lowest point is the Colorado River, at 470 feet.
