1998 College Football Preview: Part II

The NCAA football season kicks off on Aug. 30, with Purdue battling USC in the Pigskin Classic. Last week, Suite 101 NCAA football began a two-part series of previews for last season's consensus Top 10. This week, the previews continue with teams six through 10.

UCLA BRUINS (10-2)
The Bruins capped off a 10-game winning streak last season by upending Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl. Now it will be on the shoulders of quarterback Cade McNown, potential Heisman candidate, to keep the mark alive.

McNown led the NCAA with a Pac-10 record rating of 168.6 - the 12th highest in NCAA history. But he no longer has talented Skip Hicks in the backfield, and while many think highly touted recruit De Shaun Foster can step right in, Foster is untested and could be a major question mark early on. Seven starters return on offense, and five are back on "D." The true test for coach Bob Toledo's squad comes early, as the Bruins open at home against Ricky Williams and Texas. Don't think the Longhorns have forgotten last year's embarrassing 66-3 loss.

KANSAS ST. WILDCATS (11-1)
As if the coaching genius of Bill Snyder weren't enough to ensure another good season for the Wildcats, Kansas St. boasts the nations top corps of linebackers in - Travis Ochs, Jeff Kelly and Mark Simeoneau. Senior quarterback Michael Bishop is an outside contender for the Heisman, and boasts a 35-1 career record.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats success has brought big expectations. If they can't beat Nebraska for the first time since 1968, the season is a failure. Big 12 Title, you ask? With nine starters back on each side of the ball, that won't be a problem.

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (11-2)
Does Tennesse honestly believe junior quarterback Tee Martin is better than that Manning guy? Absolutely. Martin throws a better deep ball than Manning and is a fantastic scrambler. But only time will tell if he can fill those rather large shoes.

Help comes in the form of sophomore Jamal Lewis, who ran for 1,364 yards as a freshman. With the duo of Peerless Price and Jeremaine Copeland at wide receiver, and a total of eight starters back on offense, the Vols may not miss a beat in 1998.

WASHINGTON ST. COUGARS (10-2)
Last year, the Cougars were 10-2 and averaged a PAC-10 record 502.2 yards of offense. Last year, they made it to the Rose Bowl before falling to Michigan.
