Kendra Goes For The Bomb

This just isn't Dan Kendra's off-season.

Kendra, who had earlier suffered a torn right ACL during a spring scrimmage, is recovering from face and chest injuries after a chemical mixture he was making - bottle bomb built with a household cleaner and an aluminum strip - exploded at his apartment on June 1.

The Florida State quarterback required 28 stitches in his nose, chest and stomach after the explosion, which occurred while he was mixing these chemicals together out of curiosity.

Kendra, 22, underwent reconstructive surgery on April 9 after suffering the knee injury at the Seminoles annual Garnet and Gold spring scrimmage. Team doctors Tom Haney and Doug Henderson replaced portions of his ACL with a graft from his patellar tendon. They also removed 15 percent of the lateral cartilage in his knee. He is currently on a rehabilitation schedule and is hoping to be ready for the Seminoles' opener on August 31 against Texas A&M. Kendra has thrown for 1,006 yards and 12 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Last year, he was used in short-yardage situations to run the option.

He will not face legal charges for the incident. However, a school panel may still investigate whether Kendra violated the university's student conduct code that promotes responsible freedom for all students.

"Just because it's done with off-campus doesn't mean that there wouldn't be an investigation for a referral to the student judicial process," said Florida State spokesman Mark Riordan.

Under federal law on student privacy matters, the university hearing would be private unless the student requests a public hearing five days before it is held. The quarterback and his attorney, Tim Meenan, met with Florida State officials on June 18. According to Shelly Clark, a neighbor of Kendra's, the Seminole QB cried for help after the explosion. She told investigators Kendra was bleeding from his face and chest. An ambulance responding to a 911 call took Kendra to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Officials from the Tallahassee Fire Department, Tallahassee Police Department, the school's police department and the state attorney's office agreed that Kendra would not be charged, claiming that no "unlawful intent" was found.
