The Race for No. 2

The race to be Florida State's opponent appears to have a clear leader following this Thanksgiving weekend's action.

The second-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech clinched their first perfect season in 81 years on Friday with a 38-14 win over No. 22 Boston College. Michael Vick led the charge, completing 11-of-13 pass attempts for 290 yards and three beautiful touchdowns passes, and the fourth-ranked Tech defense delivered another solid performance in the victory.

The big win certainly tips the BCS scales in the Hokies' favor. With a narrow lead over No. 3 Nebraska in the bowl standings, Virginia Tech needed an impressive showing against a ranked opponent. They got it against B.C., who was outgained 555-319 in the contest. The Hokies, whose BCS numbers have been hurt by a weak schedule, has outscored ranked opponents 178-31 on the season and seems to be in good position to play for the National Championship.

But to say that Tech has the Sugar Bowl bid wrapped up would be jumping the gun, especially since the mighty Cornhuskers continue to nip on their heels following a 33-30 overtime win over Colorado. The Buffaloes appeared to have the game wrapped up, but Jeremy Aldrich missed a 34-yard field goal as time ran out. Aldrich hit a field goal to give Colorado an early OT lead, but Nebraska soon answered as Eric Crouch scored the winning touchdown from yard out.

The Nebraska win wasn't impressive, but since computers don't measure style points, the Huskers still have an outside shot of sneaking into the Sugar Bowl. One thing they have in their favor is the Big 12 championship game, as Nebraska will have one extra chance to showcase their talents on Dec. 4 against Texas. Obviously, the close win doesn't help matters. Nor does the fact that the Longhorns lost their last game 20-16 to Texas A&M, making them a less-difficult opponent in the eyes of the BCS formula. Of course, this is all a moot point if the Huskers can't avenge their only loss of the season -- a 24-20 heartbreaker to Texas on Oct. 23.

Tennessee 38, Vanderbilt 10 -- Travis Henry ran 19 times for 153 yards and scored a touchdown before leaving with a frightening-looking neck injury late in the first half. Henry, who regained movement in his arms and legs shortly after being stretchered off the field, has been diagnosed with a mild concussion and a pinched nerve after landing on his head. On the field, the victory all but locked up an at-large BCS bid for the Vols, who jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back.
