Once again, Florida State got off to a slow start. But once again, the top-ranked Seminoles rolled to a big win.
Despite the win, Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden seemed concerned with his team's performance after the game. "It scares me, but as long as they end up like they ended up, I can survive, I guess," Bowden told reporters after the game. "It's funny. You look at the score and you say, 'Yeah, boy, they're number one.' But gosh, you look at the first half and you say 'Gee, I don't know whether they are number one or not.' " Second-ranked Penn State might not have put any pressure on Florida State, but the third-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech are starting to really turn some heads. The Nittany Lions also struggled in the first half of their game against Illinois, getting a pair of third quarter touchdowns to pull away from the Illini 27-7. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, outrushed Pittsburgh 295 yards to minus 12 in a hard-fought 30-17 win. Only one team in the top ten fell this week, that being Georgia, who dropped a 30-14 decision to SEC-rival Florida. The Gator defense forces a pair of Bulldog two big turnovers early in the second half while holding Quincy Carter to just 76 yards on 6-for-23 passing. It was the 100th career win for Florida coach Steve Spurrier, and almost guarantees his team a trip to the SEC Championship.
