Penn State 27, Miami 23 -- With a 23-20 lead, Hurricanes coach Butch Davis opted to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the Penn State 21 yard line. Big mistake. The third-ranked Nittany Lions stuffed James Jackson for a one-yard gain, forcing the turnover on downs. The very next play, Kevin Thompson threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Chafie Fields with 1:41 left. Penn State would go home with a 27-23 victory over the Hurricanes.
"A field goal would not have won it. ... We thought we would make the first down," Davis said after the game. "This is a disappointing outcome to this game. You can't go into this type of game against a quality opponent like Penn State and make the fundamental mistakes we made and expect to win."
Florida State 42, North Carolina State 11 -- The Seminoles became the first team to win 100 games in the 1990s and gained a measure of retribution for last season's loss to the Wolfpack. Sebastian Janikowski kicked five field goals and the FSU defense forced six turnovers as the top-ranked team in the country continues to roll. But the win wasn't quite enough for some of the Seminoles, including quarterback Chris Weinke.
They came down here with some confidence because they won last year. We wanted to take that confidence out of them early," Weinke, who was intercepted six times in last season's loss, said. "I would have loved to have buried those guys, and we didn't bury them."
"Forty-two points is not enough against a team that humiliated us last year," added Peter Warrick, who caught nine passes for 75 yards and returned 2 punts for 46 yards.
