'Handicapped' UCLA Falls to Ohio State

No question playing without nine starters hurt UCLA on Saturday, but Ohio State's Michael Wiley and Ken-Yon Rambo didn't do the ailing Bruins any favors either. Wiley rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Rambo hauled in a pair of passes as 13th-ranked No. 13 Buckeyes rolled 42-20 over 14th ranked UCLA.

Ohio State (1-1) rebounded from last week's loss to Miami in a big way, holding the Bruins (1-1) to under 24 points for the first time in 27 games while winning their 21st consecutive home opener. Steve Bellisari came of the bench to complete 11-of-16 for 159 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and Steve Wisniewski and Jerry Westbrook added touchdowns for the Buckeyes.

Matt Stanley scored first for the Bruins, taking a bobbled pass 67 yards for the touchdown, and DeShaun Foster added 7-yard scoring run. UCLA was playing without nine starters and four backups who received two-game suspensions for illegally obtaining and using handicapped-parking permits.

Florida St 41, Georgia Tech 35 -- The battle between Heisman hopefuls Peter Warrick and Joe Hamilton was dead even, but unfortunately for the 10th ranked Yellow Jackets (1-1), the No. 1 Seminoles have far more weapons than just their star receiver.

Hamilton was 22-of-25 for 387 yards and four touchdowns, completing his final 14 passes of the game. Warrick caught one touchdown pass and ran for another, gaining with 167 yards on the evening. But Florida State (2-0), who never trailed in the contest, took the lead for good when Jeff Chaney scored on a screen pass near the end of the first half.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the game, and with the Seminoles leading 41-28 with 1:35 to go in the contest, Hamilton threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kelly Campbell to pull within a touchdown. Tech then attempted an onside kick, but the ball was recovered by FSU's Travis Minor. The Seminoles ran out the clock and escaped with its 42-game home unbeaten streak in tact.

Penn State 20, Pittsburgh 17 -- After opening the season with a pair of convincing wins, including one against then-No.3 Arizona, the 2nd ranked Nittany Lions had a tough time battling the in-state rival Panthers. Pittsburgh (1-1), 34-point underdogs coming into the game, had an opportunity to force overtime. But with 4 seconds left on the clock, LaVar Arrington blocked Nick Lotz's 52-yard field goal attempt and Penn State had escaped with a narrow victory.
