The Rams jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Less than six minutes into the game, linebacker Rick Crowell picked off Colorado quarterback Mike Moschetti and rumbled 54 yards for a touchdown. Later in the first quarter, McDougal tore through the defensive line and dashed 59-yards for another score. Matt Newton hit Frank Rice on a 67-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and Clark Haggans took a Moschetti fumble 15 yards for the fourth CSU score of the half.
North Carolina State 10, South Carolina 0 -- Barnett wasn't the only one forced to suffer through a debut with his new squad. Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz watched on as the 24th ranked Wolfpack shut out his new squad in torrential rain and fierce wind caused by Tropical Storm Dennis. The Gamecocks fumbled six times in the first half as N.C. State recorded their first shutout since 1991 and improved to 2-0. The Wolfpack had just six first downs and 96 yards of offense in the win. Virginia 20, North Carolina 17 -- Three days before meeting the Tar Heels, Todd Braverman learned he would be the Cavaliers' starting kicker. All he did in return was kick a game winning field goal from 50-yards out, allowing No. 23 Virginia to avoid overtime and a potential upset in Chapel Hill. Thomas Jones rushed for 149 yards on 35 carries and a touchdown to help the Cavaliers secure their place atop the ACC standings...for now, at least.
