Tee Martin, QB, Tennessee - Martin was a major surprise last season, performing well despite low expectations. The only ones who weren't surprised by the junior's 2,442 yards passing and 15 touchdowns (8 passing, 7 rushing) were die-hard Vols fans, who are now entitled to a hearty round of "I told you so's." This season, Martin has lost a few key wideouts, but he's gained a backfield most quarterbacks would give their left leg for. While an increased running game should benefit Tennessee's hopes to repeat as National Champs, it will likely be the death knell for their quarterback's Heisman hopes.

Quincy Carter, QB, Georgia - As a freshman in 1998, Carter put up some impressive numbers: 2,706 yards and 14 touchdowns passing; 313 yards and 5 TDs rushing. And the 22-year-old sophomore has good size and his a very talented runner. But isn't it crazy to talk Heisman when Carter's only entering his second season as the Georgia QB? If he wins it this year (and he shouldn't), it'll be because of the media hype.

Ricky Williams, RB, Texas Tech - Okay, so maybe all the Heisman talk surrounding this junior RB does have something to do with his name. But this Williams can really go, as his 1,667 rushing and 13 touchdowns should prove. Williams is a long shot, but don't count him out.

Best of the rest - QB Chris Weinke has a better chance of leading FSU to success as a team than he does garnering some personal glory...LB LaVar Arrington will make opposing offenses shudder. But defensive players never win the Heisman, right?...Marshall QB Chad Pennington has been getting better and better, and more and more people are beginning to notice...QB Joe Hamilton of Georgia Tech has a flair for the dramatic and a come-from-behind style that the Heisman people just eat up...RB Trung Candidate and his 7.0 yards-per-carry average will have a tough time with overcoming sleepy east-coast voters, but definitely deserves a close look.
