The college football season may seen like a long time away. But fear not - the opening kickoff truly isn't that far off. If you're anything like me, you're looking for anything you can find to help bide time until the Pigskin Classic.
While the folks at TSN has tapped the Penn State Nittany Lions as their top team this summer, the Florida State Seminoles grace the top spot of the CBS poll. The Sporting News - According to the Sporting News Preseason Power Poll, the Nittany Lions, who were 9-3 a year ago, earn the top spot based on their defensive play. Following Penn State are the Seminoles, then the defending champion Tennessee Volunteers, the Arizona Wildcats, and the Florida Gators. Nebraska, Michigan, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, and UCLA round out their top 10. Ratings for all 114 Division I-A teams are available at http://www.sportingnews.com/cfootball/po.... CBS Sportsline - While the Sporting News questioned the health of Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke, CBS looked to the Seminole defense in spring drills when they made Bobby Bowden's squad their preseason No. 1. Behind them was Tennessee, then Virginia Tech, Arizona, and Nebraska. TSN No. 1 pick Penn State was down at No. 6 in the CBS poll. Heisman hype - Sportsline senior writer Dennis Dodd also recently offered his preseason picks for the Heisman Trophy. Dodd's favorite? Senior Florida State wide receiver Peter Warrick. Dodd called Warrick the "sentimental favorite going in because he stayed for his senior season. Observers still don't know exactly why. Warrick will be an NFL rookie playing in the Sugar Bowl this year. Look out Jerry Rice." Other potential Heisman prospects mentioned by Dodd? Wisconsin fullback Ron Dayne, Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington, Texas Tech running back Ricky Williams, Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, Weinke, Louisville quarterback Chris Redman, and Arizona running back Trung Candidate.
