College Video Game Preview

Let's face it. The offseason has been pretty quiet so far, and its still feels like forever before the season starts. What college football fans need right now is a good NCAA video game to help kill time until the Pigskin Classic.

Fortunately, EA Sports and 989 Studios are willing to oblige -- that is, if you're the lucky owner of a Sony Playstation.

NCAA Football 2000, the follow up to EA Sports' wildly successful title of a year ago, and 989 Sports' NCAA GameBreaker 2000 are both on their way to the Playstation by this fall. But it looks as though PC gamers and Nintendo 64 owners may have to wait a little longer for their football fix.

If you're the type who likes realism in your college football games, then NCAA Football 2000 is for you. The game contains over 220 real college football teams (including ass 114 Division I-A teams, squads from the MEAC, SWAC and Ivy League, and 80 "classic" teams) and is the only game to contain every postseason bowl game (even the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl and the site of this year's National Championship game, the Nokia Sugar Bowl).

But if that's not enough for you, you can also create your own school. Build a team, choose their location, uniform and helmet color, create a fight song, and lead them to the championship. And don't worry if you don't win it all the first year, because with EA Sports' "Dynasty" mode, and can play multiple seasons and even recruit players to fill the holes.

Gamers who prefer action over depth should check out NCAA GameBreaker 2000. While not as deep as their competitor (just 160 teams, fewer bowl licenses), GameBreaker will allow players to create their own customized playbook, building on that of Pac-10 coach of the year Bob Toledo. Guess that means it'll be high scoring then, huh?

NCAA GameBreaker 2000 also features exclusive play-by-play from the golden voice of college football, Keith Jackson. Like NCAA Football 2000, GameBreaker 2000 allows you to recruit players. But in GameBreaker, you'll also be able to in 989 Sports' NFL GameDay 2000 game. Yep, they can even tear your heart out and go pro in the video games now!

And as if that isn't enough, 989 Sports has added an interesting feature called the career mode, where you have to climb your way through the coaching ranks and work your way up. If you're lucky, maybe you can land a job at your favorite school or alma mater.
