Tulane, however, deserved a shot in a big money bowl. You can't justify keeping an undefeated team out of a bowl game and letting a teams with two or three losses in. Conference affiliation should have no bearing on bowl berths. Could Tulane have beaten Florida or Syracuse? Who knows? Hey, that's why they play the game.
Will there be changes to the BCS in 1999? -- Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that Bowl Championship Series officials are considering the addition of one or more polls to help determine the country's best football teams. Tennessee and Florida State were ranked 1-2 in the computerized formula used by the series. They also were ranked best in the AP and USA Today-ESPN polls. But that wasn't the case in every poll. For instance, the online sports media did have the Volunteers voted No. 1, but they voted the Ohio State Buckeyes No. 2. According to the report, critics that adding one more poll might have too much influence on the outcome, and suggested that at least a fourth be added. Many also feel that some deserving teams, such as Tulane and Kansas State, were bypassed last season in favor of teams such as Florida that could sell more tickets or reach a larger television audience. Some fans even suggest that conference champions should not be given guaranteed berths in one of the four BCS bowls. However, the bowl committees and ABC, the network which broadcasts the BCS games, say they want freedom to pick teams that will sell tickets and generate television ratings. Officials did not reach a decision during this past week's meeting, but it is expected that they will resume discussions at their next meeting this July.
