College Football FAQs, Part I

Greetings, fellow college football fanatics! Well, this is kind of a slow news week. So I thought it might be a good idea to try and answer a couple of the questions readers ask most often. Hope you enjoy!

Who will be the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft?

Tim Couch of Kentucky. Cleveland head coach Chris Palmer has had his eyes on Couch since day one. Palmer likes everything about him - his poise, his arm, his football smarts.

Do I think it's a good decision? I'm not sure. When you have a money back like Ricky Williams out there, it's hard to pass on him. Couch will be a good quarterback, but I think Williams can make a bigger impact faster. He can help out a team this year, and I don't think Couch can adjust to the pro game quick enough.

But the Browns have their heart set on going QB. So expect a lot of happy fans in Philly this Saturday.

Did the BCS work? Was it good for football?

This year, I think the BCS did just fine. It took a lot of heat early in the year with Kansas State and Tulane getting snubbed, but for the most part it managed to work itself out.

A lot of people seem to feel that K-State's poor showing against Purdue was because they essentially had nothing to play for. They make a good point, but a team needs to be focused anytime they step on the field. The coach needs to make sure of that. And the Wildcats could have gone out and tried to prove the BCS wrong - if they were lacking motivation, that is. Either way, they didn't get the job done.

Tulane, however, deserved a shot in a big money bowl. You can't justify keeping an undefeated team out of a bowl game and letting a teams with two or three losses in. Conference affiliation should have no bearing on bowl berths. Could Tulane have beaten Florida or Syracuse? Who knows? Hey, that's why they play the game.

What it comes down to is this - was the National Champion the best team in the country? In 1998, I think most everyone agrees that Tennessee was. But things won't fall this smoothly every season. So while the BCS did work this year, I still feel that a playoff system is the only way to determine a true, undisputed National Champion.

Which team will stand out in 1999?
