Looking for Spring Coverage?

The road to the National Championship begins in spring drills. And if you're looking for great offseason coverage, check out CNN/SI.

As teams around the country open spring practice this month, there's reason for hope whether you're defending national champ Tennessee or defending 0-12 Hawaii," writes CNN/SI's Stewart Mandel. "For the true college football diehard, spring provides at least some relief for the pain of knowing there's still five months to go till the Pigskin Classic. Rest assured, CNN/SI feels your pain, and thus plans to take you to gridirons across the country these next couple months, tracking the biggest news and storylines across the sport."

The CNN/SI coverage of spring drills is far and away the most in-depth, most comprehensive of its kind on the Internet. Among the questions they examine are:

  • Who will replace Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams at Texas?
  • How are the Gators and Seminoles compensating for the absence of injured starting QBs Doug Johnson and Chris Weinke, respectively, this spring?
  • How will new Washington coach Rick Neuheisel gain fan confidence after opening his regime with ugly recruiting violations?
  • What look will Syracuse take without Donovan McNabb at the helm for the first time since 1994?
  • How does UCLA turn the ugly tide following last year's defensive embarrassment that provoked coordinator Nick Alloti's departure to Oregon?
  • Who will start at quarterback for Big Ten powers Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State?
  • And are the Kansas State Wildcats' 15 minutes of fame over after their disastrous final two games and the departure of all-everything QB Michael Bishop?

Trust me folks, from Lou Holtz's first spring on the sidelines in South Carolina to a potential quarterback controversy in Nebraska, CNN/SI has it all covered. If you're hungry for offseason college football news, visit CNN/SI at http://www.cnnsi.com/football/college/19....

Irish, Jayhawks to battle in Eddie Robinson Classic - Notre Dame officials have announced that the Fighting Irish will open the 1999 season by hosting Kansas in the second Eddie Robinson Classic on Aug. 28. It will be the first time the Irish and Jayhawks have met since 1938, and the Aug. 28 season opener is the earliest in Notre Dame history. Kansas will return 14 starters back from a team that finished 4-7 in 1998, while Notre Dame will have 11 regulars back from a 9-3 team that played in the Gator Bowl.

The classic will benefit the Eddie Robinson Foundation while honoring the legendary Grambling coach, who retired in 1997 after 55 years on the sidelines. Robinson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998 with a career mark of 408-165-15. He has won more games than any coach in college football history. Proceeds from the Eddie Robinson Classic will go to scholarship funds for high school seniors and eight graders.
