Ohio State running back Joe Montgomery ran for 93 yards on 23 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run, as the East squad downed the West 20-10 in the Shrine Bowl. Montgomery got the start after injuries kept Cecil Martin of Wisconsin and Anthony Gray of Western New Mexico out of the game.

Other stars in the game included Buckeyes quarterback Joe Germaine, who threw for 207 yards, and L.C. Stevens of North Carolina, who caught six passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee kicker Jeff Hall added field goals of 47 and 26 yards for the East.

"We didn't go into the game thinking that Joe was going to carry that much," East coach John Cooper, Montgomery's coach at Ohio State, told reporters after the game. "But we found out right before the game that Cecil and the kid from Western New Mexico couldn't play, so we had only two running backs."

"Obviously I'm proud of Joe Montgomery," Cooper added. "Joe Montgomery wanted to be here, unlike some other guys who didn't show up. And he played like it today."

Culpepper Leads Florida to Victory in All-Star Gridiron Classic - Central Florida quarterback Daunte Culpepper threw for 134 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead Team Florida to a 17-9 victory over Team USA in the inaugural All-Star Gridiron Classic. The game matches seniors who played at Florida in college or high school against players from the rest of the country.

"This guy, right here. I was lucky enough to say I coached him once," Florida coach Lindy Infante said of Culpepper. "When he goes on and becomes All-Pro, I can say I taught him all that he knows."

Team USA outgained Team Florida 293 yards to 275, but was only able to convert two of 11 third-down situations. New Mexico's Graham Leigh was 6-of-22 for 56 yards for Team USA, and Craig Walendy of UCLA scored on a 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

"I thought it was a good football game," said former New York Jets coach Joe Walton, who helped guide Team USA. "Both defenses played well. The quarterback (Culpepper) played very well; he could be a good prospect for the NFL."

Dennis Erickson returns to NCAA with Oregon State - Former Miami Hurricanes and Seattle Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson has been hired as the new coach of Oregon State University. He replaces Mike Riley, who last week became coach of the San Diego Chargers. The 51-year-old Erickson's deal is for 5-years with a base salary of $150,000 a year.
