Aggies Beat Huskers

The experts claimed that Kansas State would be the team to end Nebraska's 19-game winning streak. The experts were wrong.

The second-ranked Cornhuskers travelled into College Station on Saturday looking collect their NCAA best 20th straight victory and 41st straight regular season conference win at the expense of No. 18 Texas A&M. But the Aggies would have none of it.

Sedrick Curry picked off Bobby Newcombe with 59 seconds remaining to left stopped the Cornhuskers' final drive and gave the Aggies a huge 28-21 upset.

"They beat us because they played better," Nebraska coach Frank Solich told reporters after the game. "A&M has a very fine defense. And we hoped their offense wouldn't make so many big plays. We're down and hurt right now. We're not accustomed to taking a loss."

It was just the fourth loss in 69 games for Nebraska, dating back to a 37-27 loss to Texas in the Big 12 championship game in 1996. The last conference team to beat the Huskers was Iowa State back in 1992. It was the highest-ranked team Texas A&M has ever beaten (the previous best was a 14-13 victory over No. 4 Tulane in the 1939 Sugar Bowl) and snapped the college's nine-game losing streak against top 10 teams. As if that wasn't enough reason for Aggie fans to celebrate, the victory was A&M's first victory over Nebraska since 1955. A big-time victory, to say the least.

"This is the biggest win of my career," Aggies coach R.C. Slocum said. "It's meaningful because we did it against a legitimate team like Nebraska. We had a good hill to climb and we did it by playing sound football."

The Aggies rushed for 259 yards as a team and had two backs run for more than 100 yards - Dante Hall (113) and Ja'Mar Toombs (110). Conversely, A&M held Nebraska to 141 yards on the ground. Toombs, a true freshman, added a touchdown as well.

The Aggies held a 28-7 lead in the fourth quarter, but Nebraska cut the deficit to seven following an 11-yard run by Newcombe and a 9-yard scoring gallop by Joel Mackovicka with 4:39 to go. Nebraska got the ball with two minutes to play, but with the Huskers driving, Curry managed to pick off a Newcombe offering to secure the win.

"I was just waiting for Nebraska to try to go deep and got a good jump on the ball," Curry said. "It was the biggest play I ever made in my life."
