IN OTHER ACTION - Tons of close calls this week, but only two major upsets - Baylor's 33-30 win over N.C. State and Mississippi State's 42-23 loss to Oklahoma State.

The top-ranked Buckeyes proved they belong atop the poll, handing No. 21 Missouri a 35-14 defeat. Fourth-ranked UCLA struggled with Houston before putting the Cougars away 42-24. No. 5 Kansas State proved they were for real, exploding for 28 second-quarter points en route to a 48-7 trouncing of Texas. Auburn gave No. 7 LSU all they wanted before falling 31-19, and Pitt was just a touchdown shy of upsetting No. 8 Penn State, falling 20-13. No. 9 Washington downed BYU 20-10, and 10th-ranked Virginia needed a last-second field goal from Todd Braverman to beat Clemson 20-18.

GRID GUESSERS UPDATE - What's this? A perfect week? Yup. Thanks to last second heroics from Air Force and the huge win by Tennessee, your fearless prognosticator enjoyed a perfect 5-0 weekend to improve to 12-7 on the season.

Jeff Frankeny correctly picked four out of five games this week to take sole control of first place with a 13-6 record. Kim Johnson and David E. Brown are a game back at 12-7. Last week's co-leader, Brian Anthony, struggled to a 2-3 mark this week and is now two games back at 11-8. Eric Nichols is 9-10, and Shawn Taylor stands at 8-11.

This weeks picks include a handful of surprisingly good contests. No. 9 Washington is a roll, but can Brock Huard and company keep up their winning ways on the road against third-ranked Nebraska? Purdue flexed their muscle by squashing Heisman hopeful Dante Culpepper and Central Florida. Can they repeat the feat against a talented but inconsistant Notre Dame squad? Who will will the battle of Michigan? Can the Gators rebound to beat Tim Couch and the upstart Kentucky Wildcats? Which Chris Weinke will show up when No. 11 FSU battles No. 18 USC - the one who threw six interceptions against NC State two weeks ago, or the one who led the Seminoles to a 62-13 win over Duke? Here's my take on next week's action:

WASHINGTON over NEBRASKA
MICHIGAN STATE over MICHIGAN
FLORIDA over KENTUCKY
FLORIDA STATE over USC
NOTRE DAME over PURDUE
