What a wild weekend it was for college football fans.

The first full weekend of gridiron action kicked off Saturday with a possible game of the year candidate as Tennesse rallied with no time left on the clock to defeat Syracuse 34-33.

Volunteers quarterback Tee Martin, who struggled throughout much of the game, hit Peerless Price with a 17-yard completion to the Orangeman 26. Jamal Lewis then broke off a 13-yard run, kicker Jeff Hall sent a field goal through from 27 yards out to upend a game Syracuse team.

Martin was 9-of-26 passes for 143 yards, and Price caught six passes for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Heisman Trophy candidate Donovan McNabb completed 22-of-28 passes for 300 yards and two TDs and also ran for a score in the losing effort.

"Everyone says I did a great job today, but it really doesn't matter," McNabb told reporters after the game. "If you look at the scoreboard, we lost. I thought the game was over (after a fourth-down incompletion by Martin late in the fourth). It's just something I think we'll always remember. We still had the opportunity to stop them, we just couldn't get it done. Penalties got us down today."

IN OTHER ACTION - When the smoke cleared from this weekend, a total of eight Associated Press Top 25 teams were victims of defeat. Top-ranked Ohio State downed No. 11 West Virginia 34-17. The No. 13 Nittany Lions of Penn State rolled to a 34-6 victory over No. 21 Southern Miss. Colorado ripped No. 15 Colorado State 42-14. 16-ranked Virginia shut out No. 25 Auburn 19-0 on Thursday, and Oregon trounced No. 23 Michigan State 48-14.
