Despite Huge Effort, Nebraska Blasts Tech 56-27

© Chuck Bednar

A week ago, most college fans would not have known who Troy Edwards was. The NCAA faithful would flash a puzzled look when you mentioned that a Lousiana Tech wide receiver would break the collegiate receiving yardage mark against, of all teams, Nebraska. Mention Tim Rattay and Heisman Trophy in the same sentence (even in passing)? Inconceivable.

Of course, that was last week.

Now the nation is well aware of Rattay - the gutsy, strong-armed quarterback who completed 46-of-68 pass attempts for 590 yards against a Cornhusker defense which clearly showed some weaknesses in the Eddie Robinson Classic - and Edwards, who caught 21 passes for 405 yards while hauling in touchdowns from 94, 80, and 52.

But with the powerful Nebraska offense, it simply wasn't enough. New quarterback Bobby Newcome ran for a pair of scores and threw for another, leading the Huskers to a impressive 56-27 victory over the Bulldogs. Newcombe was 9-for-10 for 168 yards.

IN OTHER ACTION - Colorado State got a 32-yard touchdown run from Kevin McDougal in the fourth quarter to down Michigan State 23-16 in the Black Coaches Association Classic; USC defeated Purdue in the Pigskin Classic by a margin of 27-17; Campbellsville downed Austin Peay 36-23; and Florida State was scheduled to meet Texas A&M Monday night in the Kickoff Classic. Results from this game were unavailable prior to deadline.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON THE WEB - It's a great time to be a college football fan with a computer. This week marks the debut of the online sports media Top 25 poll, which this reporter is proud to be a voting member of. This week, sports reporters from across the Internet named Ohio State as the top team in the country, closely followed by the Seminoles. Rounding out the Top 10 were, in order, Nebraska, Florida, Michigan, UCLA, Kansas State, West Virginia, Tennessee, and LSU. Complete results from the poll are available at Sportseditor.com.

And on Sunday, ABC Sports debuted the official web site for the Bowl Championship Series. The site, located at http://www.abccfb.com/index.asp, will contain stats, standings, news and features throughout the season. Visit their "Road to the Bowls" section for information on how teams are rated and other rules that govern the BCS. Folks, you gotta check this one out.

NEWCOMBE OUT? - There are uncomfirmed reports that the Nebraska quarterback's knee injury is more serious than first thought. He could miss the Huskers battle with UAB this week.
