The Great Ones...Two Years From Now

The race for next year's top recruits is already under way. In a trend that has become as commonplace as underclassmen leaving for the NBA, top programs around the country are scouring summer camps to sniff out the best of a class that won't even be eligible until the 2001-2002 season. There is no doubt, however, that if top teams don't go after these players, then they will lose all hope of garnering fresh, top talent.

Some players have already made big noise at the camps. DaJuan Wagner, a point guard from Camden, New Jersey, was one of the first of his class to commit. The star player, considered to be the best at his position for his class by many, verbally committed to Memphis, where John Calipari recently became head coach. Memphis also grabbed another top player, Anthony Rice. Rice, a shooting guard, may be the best three-point shooter in this class. This may be just what the doctor ordered to turn around a Tigers team which has not lived up to expectations over the past couple of years. Eddie Curry, a 6'10", 270 pound behemoth, has been labeled the next Shaq. If he can get a little bit bigger, stronger, and more refined, then that certainly would not be an overstatement. During the summer, he has dominated against smaller competitors. If he lives up to his potential, this kid will be the real deal. He has considered DePaul, Illinois Connecticut, and more, but the NBA could be in the works.

Two other centers, however, may be even better than Curry. Tyson Chandler, a 7'1", 220 pound giant, has serious game. He could make the jump to the pros, but Arizona, Kansas, Florida, and UCLA are trying to make college as attractive as possible for him. However, the big wild-card of the centers is DeSegana Diop. Although his game is somewhat raw, at 7', he has the prerequisite size to become a star center at the next level, and while UNC, Virginia, and Miami (FL) go after him, it can be said that this is one of the best big men classes in recent years. Add 7'1" Craig Forth and 6'11" David Harrison and an imposing bunch of guys might be headed to the college basketball scene two seasons from now.

The nation's top prep player has received a great amount of praise for his sensational play, which sometimes borders on the Jordanesque. Kelvin Torbert, a shooting guard, who is being courted by Michigan State, Connecticut, Cincinnati, and Michigan, has superb dribbling and driving ability, and has a smooth, unstoppable jumper. At 6'4", he's got good size, but 6'6" Josh Childress is even bigger. He has great moves and plays with ease. He is a very exciting player. Arizona, UNC, Kansas, and Stanford seem to be in the running for this talent.
