But because of the rugged terrain of the area, Big Spring remained mostly untouched until purchased by Henry Sawyer in 1913. However, roads were not built until Big Spring became a Missouri state park in 1925. The area is closed to hunting, camping, open fires, climbing and plant collecting. But there are beautiful cabins, tucked away into wooded glens, in the park, available for rent, and there are picnic grounds, hiking trails and other outdoor activities for nature lovers. And, of course, camera buffs can get all the great shots they desire! If you're ever in the area, don't miss this beautiful "roaring" jewel of the Ozarks!
