Spring Musings

spring riding
As I wonder if it's going to yet rain, one more night, I think of the welcomed days of springtime that are soon to arrive. The days and nights where the horses and ponies gallop as they escort in the morning sun. Nights where soft nickers from one horse to another reassure that all is well in the dark. Perhaps they even feel to sing with the tree frogs, heralding in the mild air. I think of spring when cleaning out stalls and sheds is pleasant and calming instead of dreary and cumbersome in the cold of winter air. Spring evenings, where a short, barebacked ride in the woods after supper, is a welcomed way to end the long day of work.

Within these musings I also ponder on the spring clean up chores that are awaiting care. The clearing of yet another paddock and the construction of a new round pen. It is with anticipation that I dream on these. I've waited too many months and too many cold, frozen nights. The building of a new shed for miniature, fuzzy ponies; and where might I put the poultry coop? Ah, the anticipation of fresh eggs once again gracing our breakfast plates is almost a reality. Just a few more weeks. Just a few more days. One by one the days tease with the mild daylight air and temperate nights.

It is almost spring. The sap is running. The birds are filling the morning hours with frenzied song and the ponies are letting loose the thick, heavy blankets of fur that have kept them warm and dry all winter. The mud which threatens to suck boots into eternity is only a temporary nuisance and actually one that is good for dry, winter hooves; hooves that kick up in sheer joy of life, itself.

I do wish that spring would hurry. I wish to bathe in the sunlight and savor the fresh, clean air on the back of a horse once again.
