Relax and Think

If you did not take the Carol test in last year's Christmas article, don't spoil your fun. Take the test now and read the answers in this article later. Here is the article with the test, "Christmas Fun and Relaxation 2001." You will find a link back to this article there, so you need not worry about losing your place.

Relax and Think

Remember the article which I published Christmas Day, "Christmas Fun and Relaxation 2001?" I shared with you how I have fun using my head. Playing a game of Scrabble, for example, allows me to shed anxiety and to sleep more soundly. I ended the article with a fun quiz identifying Christmas carols, the kind of thinking exercise which also helps me to relax. Some of you have enjoyed working on the quiz, and I will give you the answers today with some explanations as to why some answers where not quite correct. Mind you, it really makes little difference whether you got them all correct or not, as long as you relaxed and had fun. That, after all, was the object of the exercise. BTW, one person did get all the answers right, and one person got 20 out of 21. That is an excellent score for such a tricky quiz. I also received some feedback of other ways in which families relax together with games and puzzles.

Christmas Carol Fun

Here are the questions along with the answers.
  1. Exalted heavenly beings to whom hearkened.
Angels we have heard on high This one is easily confused with #7. The difference is the little word "listen" = "hark."
  2. In a distant location the existence of an improvised unit of newborn children's slumber furniture.
Away in a manger Everyone gets this one right.
  3. Embellish the interior passageway.
Deck the halls No problem here, either.
  4. Obese personification fabricated of compound mounds of minute crystals.
Frosty, the snowman Not everyone knows this song. I only know the first line myself.
  5. Omnipotent supreme being who elicits respite to ecstatic distinguished males.
God rest you merry gentlemen I find this one problematic, because the quiz interprets the song as "God rest you, merry gentlemen," whereas it should be "God rest you merry, gentlemen." To someone fussy about punctuation, like me, for example, the position of the comma is important. I was not going to change the wording, though, because it is so cute.
  6. Proceed forth declaring upon specific geological alpine formation.
Go, tell it on the mountain Now what happens when the mountain is not alpine?
  7. Listen, the celestial messengers produce harmonious sounds.
