Lunaception, Part 2

Interestingly, Louise charts many other details besides basal body temperature and cervical fluid. She also tracks such things as interest in sex, mood, activity level, self-image, concerns and thoughts. At the end of each month, she has a graphic image of her own thoughts and behavior. I think this is a great way to understand oneself and one's patterns better.

After four months of using this light-dark method, Louise's cycles fell into perfect step with the moon. She ovulated with the full moon and menstruated with the new moon. Her cycles stayed perfectly synchronized with the moon for nearly a year, until emotional stresses threw her body out of rhythm. Six months later, she was able to return her body to its lunar rhythms.

Among the twenty-nine volunteers in Louise's test group, all but one were able to train their ovulation to follow the light-dark cycle. Nine of these women achieved synchrony with the moon (these women had used the method the longest). Many of them reported shorter, heavier periods. A few reported being "thrown off" cycle by emotional stresses or travel, but were able to return themselves to regular cycles in one or two month's use of the light-dark method. Two women became unintentionally pregnant; one by choosing to have intercourse while ovulating, and the other just two months after the birth of her baby. All volunteers reported that they became much more aware of their bodies and biological patterns.

I first became interested in lunaception because my cycles are so short and my periods are so long that it makes it difficult for me to practice natural family planning. To avoid conception, I must abstain just about every day of a typical cycle. Wouldn't it be wonderful if I could lengthen my cycles and shorten my periods through the light-dark pattern? Well, I can't give you a definitive answer yet, since I haven't had a chance to try it, but I plan to. I also envision lunaception as a possible solution for women with long cycles, anovulatory cycles, and some fertility problems. And, of course, for any woman it seems like a wonderful way to avoid conception, assist conception, and get into touch with one's biological rhythms. If any of you have experiences with lunaception, please share them in the discussion below. We'd love to learn from you.
