NFP From a Non-Believer’s Point of View

Jul 8, 2002 - © Kathleen Newton

Of course, the downside to NFP in my situation: what if my fertile period lands right in the middle of the only week out of the month that my husband is home? In this situation, it seems that a barrier method during this time is the best choice. Even if my husband were home all month, if waiting a week or so was unacceptable, a barrier form of contraception would certainly be acceptable.

After reading Kristin's articles on NFP and various success and failure stories from users of NFP, and writing this article, I've certainly formed some opinions on NFP:
  • NFP is not for everyone. NFP requires a commitment from both partners in a stable, monogamous relationship.
  • NFP, when used correctly, can be very effective in preventing pregnancy.
  • NFP does NOT deserve the bad rap it often gets from those who are relatively uninformed on its use.

What's your view on NFP? After discussing the situation in depth with my husband, we made a decision regarding which form of birth control is right for us at this time. However, I'd like to hear from you regarding your opinions on NFP, and your successes or failures using this method. I'll post my decision in the discussion area of this topic in a few days, but I'd still like to hear what you have to say regarding NFP.

Let me end by saying that, after my NFP research, and after writing out my thoughts on NFP here, I can't really say I'm a non-believer in this method of birth control. I now believe NFP is a natural, effective form of birth control, and for those in situations where NFP is appropriate, I would certainly recommend it as an alternative to barrier and chemical forms of birth control. Thanks for sharing your time with me!
