Lunaception, Part 1"Was there some way I could, on some practical basis, come into a balance with all these rhythms in a way that would enable me to avoid conception when I wanted to? And, conversely, wouldn't any such way also enable me to get pregnant when I wanted?" (p.86) This balance, it appeared, hinged on light. Light is the most pervasive trigger of biological rhythms. Day length is critical to preparing plants to bloom. Honeybees can "tell" the time of day and adjust their travels to the opening and closing of particular blooming plants. Mammals and birds migrate in response to seasonal light changes. Songbirds, who would normally be silent, sing in winter if exposed to extended light. Light even seems to effect the reproductive cycles of earth creatures. Not just any light - moonlight! Decades ago, scientists proved that moonlight affects the reproductive cycles of scallops and sea urchins. Now, the list grows longer and even includes human beings. Women who live above the Arctic Circle, for example, suffer many menstrual irregularities during the long winter. Could we "modern" women, living in lighted houses and lighted cities, come into a balance with the moon that would enable us to avoid or achieve conception? Louise knew the answer was "yes" when she stumbled upon the writing of Edmond M. Dewan, a theoretical physicist, who performed an experiment upon his wife (without her knowledge!) in 1963. Dr. Dewan 'forgot' to turn the light off on the 14th through the 16th nights of her cycle and had her sleep in darkness the other nights. His wife's previously irregular cycles (33-48 days) became regular 29-day cycles. When Dr. Dewan no longer used the light, her cycles became irregular again. Louise decided to try this experiment herself, and the rest of the book chronicles how you can, too!
