When are you going to stop nursing that baby?

Breastfeeding has become a very emotionally charged issue, especially in a country like the United States where science is revered and the human body is seen as shameful. I find it so hard to accept that people actually prefer to feed their children something called "Formula" in place of a mother's milk which was meant for babies. Think about the prevalent images our society associates with infants: bottles, pacifiers, formula, cow's milk -- none of which are necessary or healthy. A breastfed baby neither wants nor needs any of those things. But, our culture of consumerism wants us to believe that all babies drink formula from a bottle, need to be comforted with a pacifier and "graduate" to milk made for baby cows as toddlers.

If breastfeeding mothers unite to start providing natural alternatives to the commercial propaganda that is already out there -- maybe we can change this society's skew against breastfeeding. We need more positive images of breastfeeding mothers on television, in commercials, in books and magazines. We need more publications like Mothering Magazine. Visit the La Leche League International website for more information about how to get involved and project positive images of breastfeeding in your own community. Also visit Breastfeeding.com for great information, fun and TONS of great photos of breastfeeding mothers and their children!

I know there are other mothers out there who feel just like I do. I will fight the good fight and continue to breastfeed until my baby is ready to wean herself. I won't force her to give up something nutritious, wholesome and perfectly natural before she is ready.
