As we've discussed before, knowledge of tribal history and culture can aid in your search for your Native American ancestors. Although I have listed several sources for this information in the link area, I have found a few other sources which might be of interest to our fellow researchers.
One such source is found at Intertribal.net. You'll find a lengthy set of links to Native American tribes here. You'll also find a link under the Cherokee listing for the "Cherokee Companian." If you are interested in learning the Cherokee language, the author has designed a program that will help you do just that. (Sorry Mac users...the program won't work on Macintosh.) If you'll take a few minutes to click on the Power Services.Com icon on the main page of the site, you'll find some Native American history regarding the northwestern part of the United States in general, and on Oregon in particular. Hidden among the commercial links, these histories are first-hand records of western expansion. In addition to learning some of the ways that expansion was accomplished, you may just find one of your ancestor's names recorded. There is a great deal of information on missionaries to the northwest as well as trappers and homesteaders. Definitions of "Chinook jargon" --- language and terms specific to the northwestern area of the continent --- will help you better understand some of the items in the histories. If you do visit and read these histories, please come back by my Suite101 site and voice your comments and opinions on what the historians of the time had to say, and whether or not you had any success in your quest. Your feedback will forwarded to the webmaster of that site. Go To Page: 1
