There are many more rolls that are available to search. Go here to search the various rolls: http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/ro... For the database of the Dawes Rolls look under The Index to Final Rolls - database.
Remember if your ancestor was not living in Indian Territory during 1898 - 1914 they will not be listed on the Dawes Rolls. So now for your first steps: Take the surname, (last name) of the relative you have that you think was Native American and look at the various rolls on the link above. See if you can locate them. Once you locate them follow the next steps. Now, don't worry if you cannot locate them or if you don't have a surname to research yet. I will cover how to search those ancestors in my next article. Ok, so you found an ancestor on one of the rolls. The next order of business is to learn about the tribe you found them listed on. This will help give you more information about yourself and will help to prove the information factual. Now step two is to find and read two books about your tribe plus read what you can find on the Internet. When searching for books, try to read the ones that are published by a university press. They have a peer group that helps to prove the factuality of the information contained within the book. Other publishers of books are not that reliable so you will have more research work to do. Well now there you have it, your first two giant steps to finding your Native American Indian Ancestors. See you next week with the next steps to take. Until then... miigwech and mino-nibaan.
