Native American Magazines

Since the last two articles were based on serious subjects, I thought I would lighten this week's article up a bit... As a student of Native American Studies, I eagerly read everything that I can get my hands on. From art to politics, I have found that the only way to truly understand Native culture is to read, read, and read some more.

I would like to share with you some of my favorite Native American magazines. Not all of these are available online, but are valuable assets to anyone seeking to learn more about Native culture. To make things simpler, I am listing them by subject matter. The order that they appear in is not a show of preference for one over the other; they are all excellent magazines.

Native American Art

American Indian Art Magazine - From the moment you open this magazine, you will be looking at beautiful examples of Native American artwork. Published in full color, this magazine covers Native art past and present. There are listings for Native art shows and fairs throughout the country, as well as articles on issues such as buying Native artwork, features on Native artists, and historical topics. Many of the advertisements do have links to web sites for further information. This magazine is available in most magazine shops and bookstores.

Indian Artist Magazine - As stated on the front cover, this is; "The Magazine of Contemporary Native American Art, Music, Literature, Film, Photography, Theater, and Dance." The magazine is in full color from cover to cover, and is beautifully illustrated. You will find listings for Native art shows and fairs, and a great deal of information on Native artists and their work. One of my favorite features of this magazine are the in-depth articles on topics such as basketry, carving, and many others. This magazine is available at most magazine shops and bookstores.

Native Peoples Magazine - This is the only Native American Art magazine that I have found that also has a web site. While covering many of the same topics as the other mentioned magazines, Native Peoples is dedicated to the sensitive portrayal of the arts and lifeways of Native peoples of the Americas, and as such does not contain as much advertising. Instead, this magazine focuses on the culture of Native peoples and portrays their work in a cultural sense instead of a commercial one. This magazine is also available at most magazine shops and bookstores.
