Parity = Mediocrity

Among the aforementioned teams, absolutely none of those squads stand a snowballs chance in Charles Manson's afterlife in winning the Super Bowl, assuming they stumble into the playoffs. Minnesota? Jeff George is their quarterback. Jeff George = no heart = no chance. Dallas? Deon Sanders said that the reason he got beat by a Keith Poole touchdown reception in last week's loss to New Orleans is that he didn't think that a rookie quarterback would challenge him and that he was unprepared for the play. Wonderful....now we are in the NBA so we can take a play or a quarter or a game off I suppose. Carolina? Well, they have to hope for a tie in the Dallas-New York game this weekend, and this isn't hockey: Someone scores in overtime in the NFL. New York? Kerry Collins and Joe Montgomery in your starting backfield is not the formula for playoff success I am afraid. Green Bay? Can't stop anybody and Brett Favre trying to put too much on his back: You can see it with every throw he makes off his back foot.

It would be nice to see some teams with mediocre records who are peaking right now get into the playoffs instead of this bunch. If you were a Tennessee or Jacksonville, would you rather face a fading Seattle team, who has lost four of its last five games, or a New York Jets team that looks like the playoff contender everyone thought they would be pre-Vinny Testaverde injury? If the NFL had a system of putting teams into the playoffs based on strength of schedule, late-season performance, quality wins, etc.....then the Jets would be in the post-season in a flash, as would the Baltimore Ravens.

But of course, we don't have a system like the college BCS poll, which is harder to figure out than Bill Clinton's foreign policy. Nor am I advocating one, but it would be interesting to see how much different the playoff field would look with such a system in place.

For now, we have to settle on Tennessee, St. Louis, Jacksonville, or Indianapolis battling for the Super Bowl championship.

And a bunch of other teams that are going to lose to those squads.

Other notes around the National Football League:

- Take a deep look into Jimmy Johnson's eyes and he has the gaze of a defeated man. Whether his Dolphins make it to the playoffs or not, don't
