The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

This week's article is not about Mark Martin, Kenny Irwin, and Tim Fedewa the title not withstanding. It is, however, a look back at my pre-season picks as we hit the halfway point in NASCAR 2000. This is my third year trying to play Karnack the Magnificent with my Title Picks, First Year Winners, and Return to Glory picks.

CUP Season Predictions (Title chase) 1) 6 Mark Martin Mark is healthy to start the season and should win 6-7 races and win his first title.

While Mark has struggled at times, he does have one win and is seventh in points. He is always strong in the second half of a season and is only 277 points behind.

2) 99 Jeff Burton Jeff gives Roush Racing a great one two punch and could win the title if he improves his qualifying efforts and Mark slips at all.

Jeff has had a good but not great year with his lone win when he was singing in the rain. Fifth in points he has a good chance to still pull it out.

3) 18 Bobby Labonte Gibbs Racing is getting closer to that elusive title. Bobby needs to improve his short track and road course efforts.

Bobby and the Gibbs Gang are doing everything right and will win the title if they keep it up.

4) 88 Dale Jarrett The defending champion will find it hard but not impossible to repeat.

DJ has seen all the contenders step up their programs as he expected. He is stalking Bobby Labonte in third place in the title chase and has a good chance to repeat.

5) 28 Ricky Rudd The addition of Ricky gives Yates Racing a great one two punch.

Ricky is sitting right there in sixth place, a quiet but steady year so far as he adjusts to his new team.

I didn't think the new Chevy would come up to speed so fast, but then again I didn't think NASCAR would help them out so quick either. I really thought 2001 would be the season that father and son Earnhardt would rock!! Ward Burton has been the only real surprise so far to me as he sits in fourth place. I am glad to see one of the good guys in racing Bill Davis enjoying a fine year!!

FIRST Time Winners 31 Mike Skinner Most likely in a plate race

Mike has had some strong runs and could grab that first win this season, maybe even this week!
